5 Ways to Prepare Your Skin for a Peel: Insider Tips for Success

A radiant complexion doesn’t happen by chance—it takes smart preparation. If you're investing in an enzyme or chemical peel, every step you take before your appointment matters. With 12 years of expertise, I’ve mastered the art of prepping skin for transformative results. Want to unlock your post-peel glow? Follow my proven tips to set your skin up for success.

1. Avoid Retinol and Exfoliants 5-7 Days Before

Products with retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and physical exfoliants can increase skin sensitivity, making it more prone to irritation during a peel. I recommend pausing these active ingredients and skipping at-home exfoliation to allow your skin time to reset and be in an optimal state for treatment.

Pro Tip: If you're unsure which products to stop using, you can contact me for a quick review of your current regimen.

2. Focus on Hydration

When your skin is dehydrated—lacking water—it can appear dull, and fine lines may become more visible. Well-hydrated skin responds better to peels and recovers faster, giving you the best possible results. Along with increasing your water intake, pay attention to your diet by incorporating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Eat your water!

3. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Limiting sun exposure before and after a peel helps prevent hyperpigmentation and reduces the risk of irritation. Sunburned or overexposed skin is more vulnerable to the active ingredients in peels, increasing sensitivity. For best results, schedule your treatment on a day when you can take it easy for a day or two and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

4. Plan the Timing

I encourage clients to schedule their peel at least 5-7 days before vacations or special events, as the skin may appear slightly flushed or experience light peeling for a few days afterward.

Pro Tip: If you have a big event on the horizon, I recommend booking a series of three peels over several weeks to achieve the best possible results.

5. Keep Your Skin Rituals Calm and Simple

Avoid waxing, laser treatments, excessive sun exposure or picking at your skin in the few days leading up to your peel, as these can increase sensitivity to active ingredients. Stick to gentle, soothing products like Botnia's Gentle Cleanser, Hydrating Serum, and Moisturizer from Ritual Skincare's collection to keep your skin balanced and prepared.

Pro Tip: Skip trying new skincare products or treatments before your peel to avoid unexpected reactions.

By following these steps, you’ll maximize the results of your peel and set your skin up for long-term success. What’s next?
